The Skinny On Why ‘Cool’ Is Better Than ‘Smart’ When It Comes To Liposuction

October 7th, 2014

Let’s face it. The original liposuction procedure introduced 30-plus years ago just doesn’t compare to today’s laser-assisted ones. Many doctors such as Sheila Calderon, M.D., of Elite MedSpa, have realized that a laser is just the right tool to combine with liposuction because it reduces procedure time, discomfort, downtime and invasiveness.

But which laser liposuction alternative is best?

Both Smart Lipo™ and Cool Lipo™ have proven to be ideally suited for slimming stubborn areas such as the face, chin, neck, arms and back as well as very effective in treating the hips (love handles), thighs, waist, buttocks, etc. However, one system seems to have emerged as victor – Cool Lipo. This is because:

  • Cool Lipo seems to be able to work faster thus requiring fewer anesthetics
  • Cool Lipo is in fact the newer procedure (Smart Lipo was FDA-approved earlier than Cool Lipo)

Cool Lipo has the wavelength that liquefies fat and the 1064 Smart Lipo model has the wavelength to coagulate blood vessels. Cool Lipo was originally approved for all races and Smart Lipo was originally approved for caucasians. While both melt fat, Cool Lipo’s wavelength is more effective at targeting collagen so the skin will be tighter after the procedure. Another thing is that Smart Lipo utilizes what is called a “dual-platform laser,” which can translate into longer recovery times due to the possibility of more bruising and swelling. Cool Lipo is simpler in that it uses only one laser head. This feature can actually decrease downtime.

The final and most decisive argument as to why Cool Lipo is better than Smart Lipo has to do with results. Because the Smart Lipo system is simply more cumbersome, many doctors and medical spas struggle with the procedure.

Both Cool Lipo and Smart Lipo use a laser to melt fat while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. Both shrink collagen thus firming the skin. Both are performed in about 45 minutes under local anesthesia. However, there is still a difference in these popular systems.
