Xeomin Is An FDA-Approved Alternative To Botox And Dysport That Reduces Wrinkles

March 17th, 2015

Sheila Calderon, M.D., medical director at Elite MedSpa in Frisco, Texas, was one of the first select few physicians in Collin County to offer a newer alternative to Botox Cosmetic for treating facial wrinkles.

Xeomin was first approved in Europe about 10 years ago and then received FDA-approval for cosmetic use in the United States in 2010. It was introduced to the Texas market in November of 2011 by Merz Aesthetics, the maker of the popular dermal filler Radiesse.

Dr. Calderon received the Xeomin to try on select patients in 2010 and has been providing it for patients since the official approval.

“At this time, results appear quite similar to those of Botox and Dysport, and in fact, some patients say it even lasts longer than the packaging reports,” Dr. Calderon said.

Like Botox and Dysport, Xeomin is made from proteins that cause muscle relaxation to help erase wrinkles from the muscles moving during facial expression.

There is a very special manufacturing process that is used to create the active ingredient in Xeomin.

“Xeomin is made without antigens which is unlike first generation neurotoxin drugs Botox and Dysport. Xeomin is ‘naked,’ meaning that there are no additives, just botulinum toxin type A. This may mean that there is less risk of developing antibodies against Xeomin than other available neurotoxins. The body develops antibodies in response to a foreign invader and attacks. In theory, antibodies could prevent a neurotoxin from having its desired effects. Because of the lack of antibodies we do not expect to see drug resistance,” she said.

The result of cosmetic treatment with Xeomin is relaxation of facial muscles giving you a more youthful or relaxed look. Facial lines and wrinkles generally fade away in two to seven days. Results typically last three to four months, sometimes longer, and the treatment can be repeated as needed.

Dr. Calderon was selected by the distributor to be one of the first physicians in the Dallas, Texas area to try Xeomin because of her past experience and volume of work with cosmetic toxin and filler injections.

Elite MedSpa opened in 2006 in Frisco, Texas and has served the DFW area with the most cutting edge technologies; skin lasers, and is the home of cool liposuction.

“One of the other advantages of being an early adopter site for this product is that we can purchase the product at a lower cost and that means we can provide it to our clients at a lower cost,” Dr. Calderon mentioned.
